ABOUT JUNETEENTH

It was on June 19th, 1865, that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free.  Juneteenth commemorates African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing, for assessment, self-improvement, and for planning for the future. Its growing popularity signifies a level of maturity and dignity in america that is long overdue.

Traditionally the event is celebrated on June 19th and there is an effort underway to make the celebration a national holiday. Illinois is among several states that have passed a resolution recognizing Juneteenth National Freedom Day. The Jacksonville event, however, will be held on June 28th.

The day-long event is from 10am – 5pm at Community Park in Jacksonville. Jacksonville's own Robert Sampson will perform, enjoy food, raffles, fashion show, choirs, youth activities, step teams, Kidz Korner, and information booths.

This is not an event exclusive to the African American community and the public is encouraged to attend.  Come and join us for a day of celebration and fun!!
