Illinois College will host a celebration of life in memory of William D. “Bill” Merris ’56 H’01 on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 10-11 a.m. in Sherman Gymnasium in Bruner Fitness and Recreation Center.

The gathering is planned for the end of IC’s Homecoming Weekend and is open to the public. The entire community is welcome to remember the beloved alumnus, coach and professor who died on June 13, 2023, just a week short of his 93rd birthday on June 20.

Coach Merris had a career as a coach and associate professor of physical education for more than 40 years at IC. He will be honored through music, pictures and memories shared by his family, friends and former players. Ahron Cooney ’07, pastor of student and recreational ministries at Chatham Baptist Church, will serve as Chaplain and President Barbara A. Farley and Amy Wilson ’93 will be among those offering remarks in remembrance of Coach Merris.

Because Coach Merris was a lifelong IC athletics fan,  it is the wish of his family that memorial gifts be made to support athletics at Illinois College.
